Getting Started
To breed pokémon, there are some factors you need to know. From types of pokémon, to required items, below is an explanation on where to start in breeding.
Requirements
To start breeding, you can go two ways, using a pokémon-pokémon pair or a ditto-pokémon pair.
For a pokémon-pokémon pair, this requires you to use 2 pokémon of the opposite gender which share an Egg Group together. All Pokémon are classified into two of 15 Egg Groups, and Pokémon can only breed if they share at least one Egg Group in common. To see what a pokémon's Egg Group is, you can either search the specific name on the Pixelmon Wiki or browse through their Egg Groups page
here.
For a ditto-pokémon pair, any pokémon that is not in the Undiscovered Egg Group can breed with a ditto, no matter the gender. However, you cannot breed 2 dittos together, this has been disabled for our server.
Exceptions
Some pokémon require certain items when breeding, such as incense to produce their baby pokémon.
If pokémon like Nidoran (F/M) and Illumise/Volbeat breed, they will produce an egg that contains either of the forms.
Below is a table that shows the required items for baby pokémon and other information on specific pokémon forms.

Breeding Items
When breeding in Pokémon, there are a few items that can help you increase and complete the breeding process faster, especially when breeding for perfect Pokémon, or Pokémon that require a specific IV spread. This includes cases where you are breeding for Hidden Power.
Giving your Pokémon held items can affect what is passed down.
-
Everstone: When holding an Everstone, the parent who is holding the Everstone will pass down the nature of that parent all the time
-
Destiny Knot: When a parent holds a Destiny Knot, 5 random IVs from between both parents will be passed down.
- Power Items: When a parent holds a Power Item, the IV stat from that Pokémon corresponding to the Power Item will be passed down all the time. Below is a table to show what stats are effected per item.
Stat | Power Item |
HP |
Power Weight |
Attack |
Power Bracer |
Defense |
Power Belt |
Special Attack |

Another selection of items to help in breeding is hourglasses. Obtained from
crates, hourglasses can increase the breeding stage of a ranch cycle by a certain amount. These do need to be added to both pokémon for the stages to be increased.

Other Factors
Inheritance
When breeding, the parent Pokémon passes down certain traits to their offspring
IVs
A total of 3 IVs are passed down from between both parents to the offspring.
Poké Ball
The mother's PokéBall will be passed down to the child unless it's a Master or Cherish ball, in which case it is impossible to pass them down.
Growth
The growths of offspring are inherited from their parents. Growth inheritance is determined by the growth between the mother's and father's growths (e.g., ordinary is directly between runt and giant), with some random variance allowing the two growths directly next to the determined growth (using the previous example, small and huge growths would be possible as well). This slight variance in growth will occur even if both parents have the same growth. This is one of the ways to obtain Pokémon that are microscopic or ginormous, requiring two Pokémon that are pygmy or two Pokémon that are enormous (respectively) to breed together. Each offspring from these Pokémon will have a ⅓ chance of inheriting the corresponding extreme growth stats.
Ability
The mother has an 80% chance to pass down the Ability to the offspring, while the male's Ability has no effect if the mother is present. If a male Pokémon breeds with a Ditto, the male Pokémon's Ability has a 60% chance of being passed on. The Ditto's Ability does not affect this chance. This applies to Hidden Abilities and normal abilities. The 1∕150 chance of getting a Hidden Ability does not exist when breeding.
Moves
If the mother or father has certain moves, their offspring can inherit these moves albeit being unable to learn them naturally
If either the father or the mother (or both) know certain species-specific "Egg moves", their offspring will inherit these moves. The majority of these moves cannot be learned by the Pokémon, except with this method. If the father knows any moves that can be taught via TMs or HMs, the offspring will inherit these moves if they can normally learn these moves via TM/HM. If both the mother and father know moves that are in their offspring's level-up move pool, the offspring will inherit these moves. This may cause the offspring to know moves that it would normally only be able to learn at higher levels. If more than four moves fit the criteria above, the moves that the offspring will have is decided using the above list as a hierarchy; i.e., Egg moves have priority over the other criteria. If there are more than four potential Egg moves to be inherited, the mother's Egg moves are prioritized.
- If a Pikachu or Raichu breeds while holding a Light Ball, the offspring Pichu will know the move Volt Tackle regardless of whether the parents know the move.
A Guide to Breeding
Breeding can be a time consuming and an extensive process. Even with a lot of knowledge, this can take a while so have some patience during the process.
Getting the Pokémon
When you have decided what pokémon you would like to breed, you may like to know the nature and stats its needs to be at least Battle Perfect. One good website to check for this information is
Smogon. When you've learnt what nature you need you can either:
- Use a pokémon with the synchronise ability to hunt and collect the correct natured pokémon you need. Make sure the sync pokémon is in the first slot of your party, otherwise the ability will not transfer the nature.
- Use a ditto that has the correct nature and an everstone to transfer the nature over.
Once the pokémon you want to breed has been caught, you can use
/cp or
/checkparty to check the nature and stats of the pokémon. This can also be used during the breeding process to check what the hatched eggs stats are.
Breeding
When breeding, you want to make sure the pokémon are holding an everstone, destiny knot or a power item. As described above, these are needed to transfer natures and increase the odds of higher IVs during the breeding session.
As you get higher IV% pokémon throughout breeding, you can also replace the pokémon you were previously using with this higher IV pokémon to also increase breeding odds. Below is an example of this. On the left is the pokémon that was used at the start and on the right is the pokémon that could be produced throughout a breeding process. You will see that the stats are high but not perfect, showing how difficult the process can be.
Hatching
Once you have obtained an egg, you can walk, ride or fly on a pokémon to reduce the egg step count until it hatches. Pokémon with either Flame Body or Magma Armour ability in the 1st slot can double the hatching speed.
You can also go to
/warp afkegghatcher on the server to automatically be moved around by the movement plates and hatch the eggs. We recommend not to go AFK though as you can miss some cool spawns!
Stats of an egg cannot be checked unless its been hatched or you have
/egg slot from Master Rank+.
Ranching
Instead of using Daycares, Ranch Blocks have been brought back for breeding! Below is a guide on how ranching works and what items effect values.
What is Ranching?
Ranching is a previous system of Pixelmon where Ranch Blocks were used instead of Daycares. The main difference between Daycares and Ranch Blocks is how the breeding process works. Compared to using specific items or berries for breeding, Ranch Blocks work on an environment value system, where the more blocks with value points you have related to the pokémon's typing, the quicker the breeding process will be.
A perk of ranching is that when pokémon are in the process of breeding, you can see the pokémon around you!
How to obtain a Ranch Block?
As Daycares were previously used, we will be using these as the ranch blocks. Daycares can't be crafted but can be bought from
/warp pokemart for 2500, from players on
/gts, or by finding in unraided villages.
How to start Ranching:
A ranch block has a default 9x9 block range (can be increased with upgrades to a max of 15x15) where the environment value can be influenced. The presence, quality and quantity of blocks determine the value of the environment.
Excluding the block the ranch is on and blocks above, all blocks in the x and z radius will be counted towards environment. On those coordinates, only the highest block, that is at most 3 blocks higher than the ranch block, is used to calculate satisfaction. As such, stacking blocks vertically will not improve the satisfaction of pokémon in the ranch block.
Here is an example of a max satisfaction breeding area. On one side you have cakes for normal typing, items placed underneath these do not count. On the other side you have water and lily pads. The water does not count here but the lily pads do. Both sides add up to 120 points each, meaning a 50 minute breeding cycle.
Each block that's considered satisfactory has a value between 1-4, contributing to the satisfaction value. Blocks with no influence have a value of 0. As satisfaction increases, the breeding strength value can increase between 0-2, speeding up the breeding process.
- For single typing pokémon, the breeding strength value is calculated from the single type of blocks used.
- For dual types, the environment value for both types is averaged to produce the breeding strength value (rounded down to the nearest multiple of 0.5).
- If 3 types are used in a breeding process, such as Ditto (Normal) and Gastly (Ghost, Poison), the primary typing of the pokémon would be used and then dual typing rules followed.
When an environment is modified during the process enough to increase/decrease satisfaction points, the breeding speed will change accordingly. If the environment becomes unsuitable because of this, the Pokémon will start losing attraction at a rate of one stage every 30 minutes. The breeding process will continue even if the chunk is unloaded.
Below is a table from the pixelmon wiki showing the effects of satisfaction points on the breeding process.
Note that the Breeding Strength is not capped to 2, the cap only applies to Breeding Speed.
Other Information:
Once a breeding cycle is in process, the pokémon can be interacted with to check on the breeding progress.
- Pokémon cannot be mounted or given rare candies during the breeding process.
- Before upgrades, the maximum amount of daycares that a player can place at once is 3. This can be upgraded up to 9 using /upgraderanchlimit in-game. Any upgrades you had previously bought before the ranch update are given back to you for free in the menu.
- Ranch upgrades can be gained from silver crates, or buying at /warp pokemart for 6000 pokécoins. These expand the daycare by one block in one direction.
- If you are having problems with the satisfaction points showing incorrectly, break and replace the daycare and the points should start counting correctly.
- For another egg to be produced, the previous one needs to be removed from the daycare before another can be produced.
Satisfaction Values
Below is a list of Minecraft and BYG blocks that can be used for ranching and their effort values. These are organised by the pokémon's typing.
Items listed as 'Minecraft Flowers' or 'Pixelmon Ultra Space Wood Fence' means anything that is released by Minecraft or another mod that fits in that group is included. So all Minecraft flowers, including all colour variants count, or any Ultra Space wood will fit in that category.
